Sustainable development is all about meeting the diverse needs of people in different communities, social cohesion, creating equal opportunity to a strong and healthy society. In this context the livelihood approach is a way of thinking about the objectives, scopes and priorities for development. A livelihood is sustainable which can cope with and recover from stress and shocks, maintains or enhances the local and global assets on which livelihoods depends and has net beneficial effects on other livelihoods. In a country like India with a huge population of about 140 crores where more than 80 million people are living below poverty line, certainly it is crucial to think about their livelihood strategies. Livelihood strategy mainly depends on the availability of natural capital, human capital, financial capital and social capital. It includes how people combine their income-generating activities, the way in which they use their assets, which assets they choose to invest in and how they manage to preserve existing assets and income Decent livelihoods are socially as well as environmentally sustainable and maintain or enhance the capabilities and contribute to local and global livelihoods both in the short and long term.
